Did you know that the Ocotillo plant is not a cactus but a unique desert shrub found in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts that appears as dead, spindly canes much of the time, but magically "comes to life" after a rain, sprouting bright green leaves and red flowers? The Ocotillo can live for up to 100 years. It's name comes from the Nahuatl word ocotl, meaning torch. When combined with the Spanish diminutive, the word Ocotillo translates to little torch.
